Word From The Absent
Title: خبر الغائب (translates: Word from the Absent) In this fanzine , I reimagined what a newspaper might look like, both in design and in content, if it were based on the everyday lives of ordinary people. The newspaper brings together scanned family photographs and imagined dialogues with Omar Gatlato, the main character from Merzak Allouache’s 1976 film Omar Gatlato. The film captures the spirit and contradictions of post-independence urban life in Algeria; it follows Omar, a young man obsessed with music and Indian cinema. The imagined interview is written in Algerian Darja, where meaning, tone, and humor carry the depth of lived experience and are best understood in their original form.
